Protecting Wildlife on the Canal

Protecting wildlife on UK canals

As canal boat owners, we have the unique privilege of exploring the picturesque waterways of the UK. These charming canals serve as vital habitats for a wealth of wildlife. We have seen a great variety of animals from our boat and believe that preserving this natural beauty is an essential responsibility for canal boaters. Here are some tips on how to enjoy your time on the water while being a responsible steward of the environment.

Respect the wildlife

Whether you're gliding past a serene stretch of reeds or bobbing along near a popular mooring, it is always better to be mindful of the wildlife that inhabits these beautiful areas. Birds, insects, fish, and plants all coexist in the delicate ecosystem surrounding the canals.
Still-water, wetlands and riverbank environments provide diverse habitats, with canalside trees, reeds and grasses sheltering various species. Many bird species inhabit the canal sides, such as kingfishers, coots and moorhens.
We always keep our distance from any bird nesting sites, and if you notice baby ducks or swans, give them space. Adult birds can be protective, and if you're not considerate, your presence may inadvertently disrupt or stress them.

Navigation and speed

When navigating the canals, we've found that maintaining a gentle speed will minimise your impact on the waterway. Going too fast will create a wake that can erode banks and disturb species that thrive along the edges.
Take it slow and enjoy the scenery while ensuring you don't disrupt the habitats of animals such as otters or kingfishers. Avoiding sudden movements can also prevent scattering fish and other aquatic life. Travelling at higher speeds can also stir up sediment from the bottom of the canal, clouding the water and disturbing aquatic species.

Rubbish and waste management

This one goes without saying, but you'd be surprised how much rubbish finds its way into our beloved canals. As a boat owner, I think committing to keeping our waterways clean is crucial.
I always dispose of my rubbish properly and don't throw anything into the water. If you see any litter, take a moment to pick it up; our actions can inspire others.
You also might want to consider using eco-friendly products on board, especially biodegradable soaps and detergents, to reduce your environmental impact.
It's also important to ensure that your boat never leaks pollutants, such as oil, into the water. These substances will contaminate the water, reduce water oxygen levels and harm aquatic plant and animal species.

Keep dogs leashed

Dogs are great companions, but when let loose they can unintentionally disturb wildlife. Ensure your canine friend is tied up when outside, especially during sensitive breeding seasons. Not only will this protect the local wildlife, but it will also help avoid misadventures, like getting too curious near the water's edge.

Join local conservation efforts

If you're passionate about wildlife protection, consider joining local conservation groups focused on preserving canal ecosystems. Many volunteer opportunities are available, from clean-up initiatives to educational programs that promote awareness about native species. We've found it a fantastic way to meet fellow canal enthusiasts while making a positive difference.
Due to their ecological value, many canals receive the designation' Sites of Special Scientific Interest' (SSSIs). Conservation organisations such as The UK Canal & River Trust protect and manage the biodiversity and restoration of these waterways.

Plant native flora

I've found that planting native flora near your canalside mooring is a fun way to support wildlife. Native plants provide essential food and shelter for local wildlife, including insects and small mammals.
We can find native flower packets or shrubs at local garden centres that promote biodiversity without intruding on existing ecosystems. Before you plant, look up the plant species that belong in an environment.

Stay informed about conservation

Knowledge is power! Stay updated on local wildlife regulations and conservation efforts in your area. Many websites and publications focus on the health and ecosystems of UK canals. In our experience, staying informed better equips you to contribute positively to the wildlife that enriches our boating experiences.

Consider a solar boat

Solar boats are a great way to explore the canals without causing environmental damage. By generating electricity with solar panels, you rely on clean, renewable energy, minimising your carbon footprint.
On the waterways, you are constantly surrounded by nature, which can be incredibly peaceful and serene. This is great for people who love the outdoors and want a tranquil lifestyle, and a solar-powered boat adds to that enjoyment.
Unlike fossil fuels, solar energy doesn't produce harmful emissions or pollutants, making it an environmentally friendly option.
As canal boaters, we have a unique opportunity to enjoy nature's beauty while directly helping protect these precious environments.
Embracing these laid-back yet impactful practices will ensure that future generations can continue to appreciate the wildlife diversity that our canals offer.
So, the next time you head out for a leisurely cruise, remember that we're all stewards of these enchanting waterways and every small action counts. Happy boating!
