Where To Moor Your Canal Boat

We all know there's nothing like the serenity of gliding through tranquil waters, your beloved canal boat as your trusty companion.
After soaking in the views and gentle sway of your vessel, you must find the perfect spot to moor.
Knowing where to dock can make your trip great, whether on a weekend jaunt or a longer journey. So, let's examine some prime mooring spots.
Most canals are sprinkled with official mooring spots managed by organisations like the Canal & River Trust or private marinas.
These spots typically offer more amenities, such as water points and waste disposal, and sometimes can even have shoreside facilities like shops or pubs.
They're often perfect for stocking up or for an easy evening after a long day on the water.
We recommend that you always make sure to read the signs and follow the guidelines, as staying beyond the allotted time can incur fines.
Some spots allow for overnight stays, while others will have strict time limits.

Visitor moorings

For those venturing on a leisurely cruise, keep an eye out for visitor moorings. These are often found in towns or scenic areas, making them ideal for exploring the local attractions and enjoying the culture. Visitor moorings usually offer shorter stays, typically 48 hours, so it's worth taking advantage of them to make the most of brief visits.
A good example would be the moorings in the historic city of Bath – a beautiful place to moor your boat, offering a stunning backdrop along the Kennet and Avon Canal. A different option would be the lively moorings of Liverpool's docks, providing a vibrant scene with plenty of eateries.

Wild mooring

If you're adventurous, we think wild mooring might be your cup of tea. While not technically 'official' moorings, many experienced boaters have their favourite secret spots where they can drop anchor away from the hustle and bustle.
Respect the environment, avoid mooring too close to residential properties, and watch out for potential restrictions. We need to caution that wild mooring can raise eyebrows with locals or authorities, so make sure you pick your location carefully, be respectful, and be prepared to move and find a new spot if you have to.

Boat marinas

Marinas provide an excellent alternative for longer-term stays. In addition to mooring services, many marinas offer additional facilities like electric hook-ups, showers, and laundry services. If you plan to stay for an extended time, a marina might be worth considering.
Marinas often have a strong social element, hosting social activities and boating communities to help you make friends and immerse yourself in the local boating culture.

Navigational landmarks

We've found that having a navigation plan can pay off on any boating journey, especially when it comes to mooring. Certain landmarks, like locks and aqueducts, may have designated mooring spaces nearby that can make for a convenient stopover.
Some of these moorings offer great views and often provide fantastic opportunities for photography and exploration. A good example is the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, which offers visitors scenic views of North Wales.

Practical considerations

Before you tie off, we'd like you to consider a few practicalities. First, consider your vessel's size when choosing your mooring spot, as not all locations accommodate larger boats. Also, ensure you have proper fenders and mooring lines to secure your boat safely.
While you're at it, don't forget to check the weather forecast. You don't want to be caught out by sudden weather changes that can make some spots less than ideal.
Finding the right mooring spots for our boats can enhance our canal boating experience. Various options are available, from official moorings and visitor spots to wild moorings and marinas, so there's something for every type of boater.
Whether you prefer the amenities of a marina or the tranquillity of a secluded spot, it's worth finding the proper mooring. Happy boating, and we hope you find idyllic spots that leave lasting memories on your canal adventures!
